When you workout, what do you focus on?
Are you focused on your form?
Are you thinking about counting your reps?
Do you let your mind drift to what you have to do later that day?
If you want to give yourself the best opportunity to build strong, healthy muscles in a body that feels fit, mobile, and energized, then there is one thing and one thing only that you should be focused on when you workout…
…and that is what is happening within your body, specifically squeezing your muscles.
See, too often people workout with the intention of checking the box of doing all the stuff that happens outside of their body–doing the reps, doing the sets, having “perfect” form, keeping up with the class or the instructor…
It is all focused on what is happening externally to your body.
But, the results you get from working out–and specifically building strength, increasing mobility, getting more fit, and building muscle–are a result of what happens within your body.
In other words, your body doesn’t know whether you are holding a dumbbell that weighs 20 pounds or a dumbbell that weighs 15 pounds. All it knows is the challenge the dumbbell creates relative to its capabilities.
Likewise, your body doesn’t know whether you do 5 reps of an exercise or 55 reps of an exercise. All it knows is the amount of fatigue it experiences relative to its capabilities.
More challenge equals more results.
More fatigue equals more results.
Which means if you are lifting weights with big numbers but aren’t challenging yourself, or if you are doing a lot of reps but aren’t fatiguing yourself, then you are leaving a lot on the table in terms of the results you could be getting from your workouts.
Instead of worrying about the weight, the reps, etc, focus on what is happening within your body when you workout.
Pay attention to how easily you can make a mind-muscle connection to the muscles you are trying to work; how strongly you can feel them contract; how great of a level of fatigue you can bring them to; all while continuously leaning into the feelings of challenge and fatigue instead of shying away from them to try to make things feel easier.
Yes, this will be uncomfortable to do at first.
Yes, your workouts would be much easier if you didn’t do this.
But having easy workouts isn’t the point. The point is to get results, and only doing things that are easy won’t get you the results you are looking for from a strength, health, and performance perspective.
So how can you learn to stay focused on these things and not let yourself off the hook when you workout?
