Did you know that one of the most effective things you can do to decrease pain in and around your joints is to get your muscles stronger?
Many people think that joint issues are simply issues with their joints and need to be resolved by fixing the joint itself.
If they have a knee issue, that means there’s an issue with the knee.
If they have a shoulder issue, that means there’s an issue with the shoulder.
But for over 13 years now, we have seen that every time there is a joint issue, there is an associated muscle issue, as well; and by getting the muscles stronger, the issues and symptoms with the joints go way, way down.
Not 10% of the time…
Not 50% of the time…
Not 70% of the time…
Everying. Single. Time.
Which is why we feel so confident saying that if you have a joint issue–achiness, pain, stiffness, etc.–you 100% have a muscle issue that is largely contributing to the joint issue.
And, by getting your muscles stronger and functioning better, your joint issues can get better, too.
But why is this??
There are three big things your muscles do to help keep your joints healthy and feeling well, and when your muscles aren’t strong or aren’t working well, your joints will suffer.
1. Your Muscles Move Your Joints
Your muscles make sure your joints are able to move through their full range of motion. This is a necessary requirement for keeping the cartilage in your joints healthy.
When the cartilage in your joints starts to degrade, you are going down the path to arthritis. However, by keeping your muscles strong and functioning well, your joints will be able to continue to move well and your cartilage will be able to stay healthy.
2. Your Muscles Stabilize Your Joints
While your muscles make sure your joints can move, they also make sure your joints don’t move too far, resulting in serious injury to ligaments, tendons, and other tissues.
By stabilizing your joints with your muscles, you are ensuring that your joints can move exactly how they are designed to without risking them moving too much or too little.
Think of your muscles as the internal braces for your body. Instead of using a knee brace, ankle brace, orthotics, or other braces, your muscles can act to serve that same purpose of keeping your joints stable while also making sure they stay mobile.
3. Your Muscles Protect Your Joints From Stress
Every time you step weird, land from hopping down off a ledge, catch something as it is falling, or use your body in a variety of ways, your joints take on stress. However, the better your muscles work and the stronger they are, the less stress your joints will have to take on.
Your muscles can act like shock absorbers for your joints. Imagine driving your car down the road with and without shocks…which is going to be more comfortable?
If the road is even a little bit bumpy, you are going to be feeling it if your car doesn’t have shocks. Your muscles and joints are the same way!
If your muscles aren’t strong or aren’t functioning well, your joints will feel every little bump as you go through your day. Unfortunately, this can lead to some pretty significant stress and issues with the joints if done for a long enough time.
But, once you get your muscles strong and functioning well, that can completely change.
Time and again, we have seen that when clients have a joint issue, getting their muscles working better using Muscle Activation Techniques® changes everything for them.
