Did you know there are two things your joints need in order to stay healthy?
It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about your ankles, knees, hips, spine, shoulders, or all of the little joints in your feet, hands, fingers, and toes.
They all need two things in order to remain healthy.
See, within your joints is a special tissue called hyaline cartilage. This tissue is super low-friction, allowing your joints to move smoothly, and also offers shock absorption for your joints.
Keeping your hyaline cartilage healthy is the key to making sure your joints stay feeling and functioning well, and there are two things that your hyaline cartilage needs:
1. Motion of the joint it is in
2. Force going through the joint it is in
In other words, it needs to get squished (force going through it) and it needs to get unsquished (motion of the joint).
Here’s why this matters for your workouts–within your body there is one thing that will do both the squishing and unsquishing of the hyaline cartilage.
Can you guess what it is?? …
It’s your muscles!
Your muscles move your joints AND your muscles put forces through your joints, both of which help to keep your hyaline cartilage healthy.
And, one of the best things you can do to make sure your muscles are doing this effectively is to exercise and do strength training regularly.
