One thing we have seen with many new clients at Muscle Activation Schaumburg is a subtle fear of not wanting to go downhill.

Whether you have seen loved ones lose their autonomy or physical freedom; or you have friends who are not able to do everything in life they enjoy like golfing, skiing, or tennis; feeling like you want to maintain your current level of health, strength, and fitness for as long as possible is completely normal.
What we have seen over the years is there are three big culprits that ultimately cause people’s health and fitness to start declining.
The first culprit is an injury, whether it is a specific trauma like herniating a disc or whether it happens gradually over time like arthritis.
The second culprit is declining strength levels due to an inconsistency with strength training that is both challenging and strategic, i.e. not working out enough and, specifically, not lifting weights enough.
The third culprit is not recovering fast enough from daily activities so each day ends up pushing the body further and further away from their health and strength goals.
Now, the good news is that each of these three culprits can be controlled for and largely prevented through lifestyle choices such as proper nutrition, sufficient sleep, and consistent exercise.
But, there is one other thing that can knock out all three of these culprits at once, and that is Muscle Activation Techniques® (or MAT® for short).
MAT® is a systematic process to evaluate for and address muscles that are not working well. When you have muscles that don’t work well, other muscles have to pick up the slack and compensate. Over time, this can lead to those overworking muscles becoming tight, fatiguing quickly, and, eventually, constant pain in those muscles and joints.
If you think about it, that is pretty much the story of every person who feels like they are getting old – their body gets tight, they are more tired than they once were, tasks are feeling more difficult than they once did, and eventually they are in constant pain.
So, how does MAT® go about addressing these issues head on and help you hold onto your youth for as long as possible?
There are three big things to know.
1. MAT® Is Going To Help Your Muscles Stay Stronger For Longer
MAT® will find the muscles that are underactive and weak and get them working better and up to speed. This will help you continue to strengthen those muscles with your workouts and your strength training.
One of the definitive signs of aging is a loss of strength resulting in the loss of ability to do various activities. With Muscle Activation Techniques®, the goal is simple – assess your body to figure out where your muscles are not working well and address those muscles to get them working better.
When your muscles work better, they are stronger. And when your muscles are stronger, you are able to do more of the things you love to do and keep doing the things you enjoy doing.
2. MAT® Is Going To Help You Ward Off Injury
When your muscles don’t work well, your joints, ligaments, fascia, cartilage, and other passive tissues have to take on more stress. For a short period of time, that may not be a huge issue. But eventually these tissues can give out or wear down to the point that a major injury occurs.
Just like general strength training can help to prevent injuries, making sure your muscles are working well can help to reduce injuries, too. Ultimately, this means that you have a much greater chance of holding onto the younger, stronger version of yourself that you are feeling right now.
3. MAT® Is Going To Help You Recover
Imagine that your muscles are like little workers on a construction site. The more workers there are, the less each worker has to do in order to get the job done and the easier each job feels.
When you get your muscles working well with MAT®, the things you do throughout your day literally become easier for your body because you have more muscles working better to help complete the jobs.
What this means is each individual muscle has to do less work, and ultimately has to get less tired, which means it has less to recover from each day.
A common side effect our clients report is they feel more energized throughout the day after getting MAT®. This is their body’s way of saying, “Each muscle doesn’t have to do as much now so they’re not getting as tired and they are ready to go again sooner.”
Whether you are trying to recover from your workouts, from playing recreational sports, from a crazy travel schedule, or just life in general, MAT® can help.
So there you have it, three ways that MAT® can help you maintain your health and function. You may not be training for a competition or trying to maximize your abilities. All you may want to do right now is maintain exactly where you are at. In order to do that, your strength needs to be kept up, you need to reduce your risk for injuries, and you need to make sure you can recover quickly from the stresses of your day.
MAT® can be a wonderful tool to help you maintain your health, strength, fitness, and mobility so you can continue to do all the things in life you want to do for as long as you want to do them.
