Shoulder Impingement – Three things you can do with your exercise to help

Welcome back to this week’s edition of 2-Minute Tuesdays where we are talking about one exercise topic for two minutes and giving you three reasons why you should follow our advice.  Now this week, we are talking to those of you who may be experiencing some shoulder impingement.  What things can you do with your exercise to keep your shoulder safe while still getting your workouts in?

1) Use Isometrics

Exercise Tip Number One If You Are Experiencing Shoulder Impingement:  While weight training, use isometrics.  Often times when people feel a bit of discomfort in an area, or even if they are getting physical therapy in an area, they may feel like they can’t do much at the gym to keep the area strong.  However, if you use the same exercises that you have always done, but use isometrics (stop and hold the motion at different positions), this can really help to keep your muscles strong as you heal from the shoulder impingement.

2) Do Exercises That Don’t Involve Your Shoulder

Exercise Tip Number Two If You Are Experiencing Shoulder Impingement:  Do exercises that don’t involve your shoulder.  Have more leg days.  Do more cardio.   Do more exercises that don’t require the use of your shoulder directly so you can keep exercising without creating greater issues for your shoulder.

3) Schedule With Your Local MAT® Specialist

Exercise Tip Number Three If You Are Experiencing Shoulder Impingement:  Schedule with your local Muscle Activation Techniques® (MAT®) specialist.  MAT® is a fabulous thing to use between physical therapy and traditional exercise.  Now, you do have to be cleared for regular exercise in order to do MAT®.  So, once you finish physical therapy, this can be a great way to gradually get back into traditional exercise while making sure that your shoulder stays safe and your muscles stay working well.
