When you hear the word “muscle”, what do you think of? A body builder? A car? Strength? A certain look? A specific individual, such as Arnold or Dwayne Johnson?
What about when you hear the word “health”? What comes to mind then? Perhaps feeling good and energized; being free of illness and disease; or maybe the various components that promote health such as exercise, nutrition, and sleep.
Now, do you ever equate “muscle” to “health”, whether it be your overall physical health, the health of your joints, your emotional health, or the health of various organs such as your skin, heart, and brain? In other words, when you hear “muscle”, do you ever think health?
So often we get caught up in the historical presentation of muscle and fail to recognize its value beyond aesthetics and ego. But, if you can buy into the ideas that 1) exercising is a necessary component for health and 2) your muscles are necessary for you to be able to exercise, then it is not a big step to make the connection that your muscles are vital for your health.
And not just for your health in the here and now, but for your long term health, as well. Because if you are on board with this concept that your muscles are vital for your health, then we can also draw the conclusion that in order to keep up your health, you have to keep up your muscles – their function, their size, and their strength.
Getting to this step is a big one, because once you are here, it can be the start of shifting the focus of your exercise from lifting weights, burning calories, and increasing your heart rate to challenging and improving your muscles. Once you make this shift, the value of your exercise is no longer determined by how sweaty you get or how sore you feel, but rather by how much benefit the exercise provided to building and maintaining the health and function of your muscles. Because, in the end, that is what is going to allow you to keep doing the things you really enjoy the most.
