Welcome back to this week’s edition of 2-Minute Tuesdays where we are talking about one exercise topic for two minutes and giving you three reasons why you should follow our advice. Now this week, we are talking to those of you who are in search of a personal trainer. You want someone who can help you exercise and who can create exercise for your body, but you aren’t sure how to find a qualified one.
1) Don’t Judge Their Expertise By Their Physique
Tip number one – so often we get caught up on how somebody looks, especially if that person is going to help you become a healthier you. But, you have to make sure to not judge someone’s expertise on their external appearance. Often times, people have different health and fitness goals or different ways of feeling healthy themselves, so make sure you are looking beyond their external appearance when determining whether they are qualified or not.
Action Step: Reserve your judgements of someone’s qualifications for what they know and the results they can help you get, not on the results they get for themselves as their goals may be different than your own.

2) Watch How They Work
Tip number two – if you can, try to watch them and see how the personal trainer is working with their clients before you start working with them. Are they doing the same workout for each of their clients? Or are they designing workouts for each client’s needs and abilities? Make sure that they are not just giving each of their clients the exact same workout, because you want something that is built for your body.
Action Step: If you have the opportunity to observe how they are working with their clients from a distance, take advantage of it! This is easier to do if you are already a member at the club they are working at, but if not, try asking the sales team at the club who they may recommend.

3) Figure Out How They Problem Solve
Tip number three – as you are interviewing personal trainers or looking through one of their online profiles, try to figure out how that trainer thinks and approaches problems. A personal trainer’s job is to help be your problem solver, so just because one thing worked for someone else or it worked for the personal trainer, does not mean it will work for you. You are looking for someone to help you problem solve as you progress on your health journey.
